Boarding Grammar

AE-410Era: ember-ageTech tier: 3

Veilspire harbor syntax for when a hull, lot, or corridor may be entered for audit—width, silence, and stamped receipts arranged so appetite cannot masquerade as procedure.

Boarding grammar is not a single statute. It is the ordered syntax by which Veilspire harbormasters, Iron Syndicate assay clerks, and guild chute arithmeticians decide when a vessel, ash lot, or holding corridor may be entered for measurement without the entry itself becoming contraband.

The phrase predates the Glass Consensus Symposium, but symposium charter made it teachable: storm glass, orrery logs, and binding sigils must agree before boarding grammar authorizes a hull to clear tiers. What remained informal—when silence counts as cargo—became codified in tide-celled louver audits and the receipt windows that follow phosphor stripes through holding bays.

Core clauses

Width before voice. A boarding may not begin until phosphor width is logged. Width is honesty held to tolerance: a stripe that narrows without receipt is treated as confession; a stripe that widens without seal is treated as smuggling courtesy.

Corridor silence. Upstream routes are not boarding subjects. Auditors accept corridor—the local breath-price a runner pays to keep rumor from leaving the bay—not the runner's full itinerary. Silence without receipt narrows at the next tide-cell.

Receipt of withheld breath. When a party survives on discipline rather than disclosure, harbor procedure demands a sealed receipt: amber thread braided on treated vellum, stamped with the inverted-lung iron face. The receipt logs what did not leave the lungs as inventory, not rumor. Boarding grammar reads stamped silence as inventory until width fails.

Count by cell. Tide-celled louvers partition audits into discrete cells. Each cell may confirm conditional silence, demand a receipt before the next opens, or invite boarding grammar to test whether appetite has learned manners.

Who speaks it

Assay clerks on catwalks inventory what did not happen. Gray listeners—Syndicate reservation officers—stand close enough to hear corridor, far enough to deny confession. Orrery auditors like Jace Morrow treat boarding grammar as data: stillness is a reading; a clicker that stays still is a line item.

Guild chute arithmeticians translate runner tempo into harbor tempo so the Ashen Knot and similar smuggling networks cannot pretend their knots are poetry. The grammar does not loosen knots—it translates them into widths a board can stamp.

Limits

Boarding grammar binds procedure, not guilt. A clean receipt clears the next cell; it does not erase upstream debt. Stamped silence expires when phosphor width fails—often because something lung-shaped above the lot inhales on the stamp and narrows tolerance by a lie both sides can meter.

Cross-tier boarding requires duplicate receipts in neutral harbor script, the same neutrality binding sigils demand when ley weather shifts. During surge-class events, entire receipt windows can go politely insane: every seal insisting silence was signed under different weather.

Failure modes

  • Receipt hunger: creatures and contraband apparatus that learn to taste receipt air treat stamped breath as appetizer, not closure. Width narrows; auditors measure after exhale.
  • Boarding shame: when a manifest the stripes already signed forces a public boarding, listeners price testimony in neutral ink and orrery torque—grammar becomes theater.
  • Grammar leak: corridor silence treated as route disclosure collapses the clause; rumor acquires half-life and harbor fines accrue as if width had never been held.

Veilspire teaches that a city survives its appetites when even silence must file paperwork first.
