Ledger Veil Step Through

MS-09.9Era: mirror-springTech tier: 4

Eris crosses the mirror’s thickest modesty; the gauge-card’s twin glyphs bite clean through fog, and the hypothetical shape answers by counting her stride as debt already paid.

The veil did not tear. It audited—fog thinning in bands until the dark behind it had to choose whether to be absence or appetite.

Eris felt the duplicate’s presence like a second pulse pressed to the inside of her ribs: not mimicry, alignment—two ledgers agreeing that walking counted as testimony.

The gauge-card warmed. Ingress flared white at the rim; ledger stayed stubborn, a bruise that refused to be polite. Salt-signal climbed her calves in numerals that no longer indexed panes but steps, each bootfall a receipt the symposium had never meant to print.

The shape that was not moth, not person, lifted anyway—first as pressure, then as outline—until it wore the mirror’s own modesty like a borrowed coat: edges soft, center sharp.

“Hypothesis,” Eris said, because naming was the cheapest ward she had left.

The shape answered without voice. The fog wrote it: a line of brine teeth along the glass, each tooth a fraction, each fraction a clause. Storm-glass cold sharpened into counsel—measure this becoming pay this—and Eris understood the symposium’s joke had never been about mirrors.

It had been about who got to call humidity innocent.

She stepped through.

On the other side, corridors doubled without duplicating: the same humid filing, the same ranked breath-witnesses, but the air carried a violet undertone, as if compass north had learned to blush. Her shadow fell beneath her again—one ledger—and the duplicate’s beside it, still refusing argument.

The gauge-card ticked once, intimate as a wrist-pulse, and the final numerals on her ankles linked into a chain that pointed forward, not back.

Eris exhaled. The mirror behind her filmed over instantly, modest as linen.

“Named by moisture,” she murmured, because some witnesses only exist after you pay for the door.
